Address validation for existing customers

Existing customers are by far the most valuable customer group in retail. Ideally, retailers and customers have known each other for a long time and regularly conduct reliable business with each other.

But what happens if the master data of existing customers is incorrect or data changes?

Up to now, address lists were regularly matched by dealers for this case. This means that master data is checked in one go and the result is sent back to the dealer. This manual process was repeated every few years in order to always have up-to-date addresses.

However, this approach has some disadvantages.

  • All or a large portion of customers must be audited.
  • For retailers, it is not possible to estimate which of these customers will become active again.
  • Merchants have no information about whether the customer data is still up to date. Moves, marriages, deaths, address changes such as incorporations with renaming of streets and places can happen.
  • The process is manual and error-prone. In many cases, the correct address cannot be clearly determined. This results in effort for manual clarification by e-mail, mail or telephone.

The idea behind this is based on the assumption that active customers order via the web store and all address changes are made centrally via the store by the customer or employee.

Here, the existing customer check checks for each order transaction whether a one-time check has already been performed for an address. A check is saved with a time stamp and check result.

If an address is incorrect, we may ask the customer to correct the address directly before the incorrect address is transmitted for the next order.

Since an active address change is also always checked, retailers always have up-to-date addresses in their system.

This leads to cost advantages for the dealers.

  • Only customers who are actively seeking to make a purchase need to be verified.
  • Customers can immediately transfer their correct address from the address suggestions or correct it manually. 
  • Manual effort is eliminated.
