A machine-readable code is used to uniquely identify the destination region or destination parcel center. This process ensures precise and efficient management of shipments in DHL's logistics network.

A DHL shipping label must always contain both the routing code and the ident code correctly and completely. Both codes are essential and enable the automatic recording and seamless further processing of shipments.

The routing code provides information about the transportation route of a consignment. At first glance, this may not seem like much, but with a certain number of shipments, even such small amounts add up very quickly.

In which situations is the coding fee charged?

Guide code is not readable
An unreadable routing code can have various causes. Problems often arise due to damage to the label during transportation. Soiling, moisture and poor print quality (e.g. due to empty printer cartridges or blurred printing) can also make the code illegible. Incorrect positioning of the code on the consignment can also impair legibility.

Guide code missing
The code is often forgotten when the shipping label is created, or technical errors such as problems with the printer or label generation software lead to the routing code being missing. Damaged labels or the loss of the label during transportation also play a role, and sometimes the routing code is missing due to faulty data transmission between the systems of the shipper and the logistics service provider.

Guide code is incorrect
The most common causes of incorrect routing codes are incomplete or incorrect address data for the recipient of the consignment. Technical problems, e.g. software errors in the system, can also lead to an incorrect code in rare cases. The human factor, for example errors when entering the data, or an inaccurate or incorrect assignment of the code to the logistics processes can also render the routing code unusable.

In addition to the routing code, the shipping label must also contain a second barcode, the so-called identcode. Of course, logistics employees can check every single address „on foot“ - such manual research is unavoidable if a shipping label cannot be generated. But this eats up a lot of time - and therefore resources and hard cash.

In times of massive staff shortages and simultaneously increasing shipment volumes, no company can really afford such expensive manual research efforts. This is where various software solutions can help to automate processes. These software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions are often used in the backend, i.e. at the end of the shipping chain. However, manual work is only reduced slightly.

As a SaaS provider, endereco cannot intervene in technical errors in the printing or generation of shipping labels or their incorrect application. However, we effectively support online retailers, mail order companies and fulfillment centers with problems caused by incorrect routing codes by providing high-quality tools and services to optimize data quality:

Address verification and correction: endereco validates and corrects address data in real time to ensure that the routing code is based on correct and complete data.

Automatic guide coding: By integrating endereco solutions, routing codes can be generated directly and error-free.

Inventory data validation: endereco checks existing databases and eliminates errors that could lead to incorrect routing codes.

Efficient system integration: endereco's tools can be easily integrated into existing systems to optimize workflows.

Support and advice: endereco offers comprehensive support to help shippers identify and resolve specific routing coding issues.

Our services can be integrated not only in the merchandise management system, but also directly in the checkout process! This means that most incorrect addresses do not even reach the backend because customers are asked to check their data during the ordering process and correct it if necessary.

If you have any questions about lead coding and/or address data, just get in touch with us!
