Colorful house facades, delicious sm\u00f8rrebr\u00f8d and bicycles everywhere you look. Denmark is full of charm. The small kingdom in the north, famous for its hygge lifestyle, regularly ranks among the happiest countries in the world.<\/p>\n

For you as an online retailer, it is worth looking north. 83 % of the Danes<\/a> shop online at least once a month. And around 40 % of cross-border orders<\/a> go to stores in Germany or Sweden. And the geographical proximity makes shipping uncomplicated.<\/p>\n

But: The Danish address system has a few peculiarities. Floor abbreviations, apartment locations, postal district letters. Nothing complicated, but you should know the details.<\/p>\n

This is how Danish addresses are structured<\/h2>\n

The basic structure is clear. The subtleties lie in the floor system, the apartment location abbreviations and the postal district letters of larger cities.<\/p>\n

Line 1: Recipient name<\/h3>\n

The first line contains the full name of the recipient.<\/p>\n

For business addresses, the company name comes at the top. The contact person follows below, introduced by \u201eAtt.\u201c or \u201eAttn.\u201c.<\/p>\n

Line 2: Street address with floor and apartment details<\/h3>\n

The second line contains the street name, followed by the house number. In apartment buildings, a comma is followed by the floor and apartment location.<\/p>\n

The floor system<\/strong>Danes refer to the first floor as the \u201est.<\/strong>\u201c (for \u201estuen\u201c).
The floors above count in ascending order: \u201e1.<\/strong>\u201e, \u201e2.<\/strong>\u201e, \u201e3.<\/strong>\u201c and so on.<\/p>\n

Basement floors also have their own abbreviations. \u201esmall.<\/strong>\u201c stands for the first basement floor.
Further levels below run as \u201ek2<\/strong>\u201e, \u201ek3<\/strong>\u201c to maximum \u201ek9<\/strong>\u201e.<\/p>\n

The housing situation<\/strong>: An abbreviation indicates where the apartment is located on the floor:<\/p>\n

tv.<\/strong> = \u201etil venstre\u201c = left
th.<\/strong> = \u201etil h\u00f8jre\u201c = right
mf.<\/strong> = \u201emidt for\u201c = middle<\/p>\n

A few examples:<\/p>\n

\u201eN\u00f8rrebrogade 28, st. th.\u201c = first floor, right apartment
\u201eGammel Kongevej 15, 3. tv.\u201c = third floor, left apartment
\u201e\u00d8sterbrogade 100, 1st mf.\u201c = second floor, middle apartment<\/p>\n

The street line may also contain details such as a part of a building or a rear building.<\/p>\n

Line 3: Postal code and city<\/h3>\n

The third line contains the four-digit zip code (postnummer), followed by the city name.<\/p>\n

Example: \u201e4000 Roskilde\u201c or \u201e7100 Vejle\u201c<\/p>\n

Larger cities such as Copenhagen, Aarhus or Odense are divided into postal districts. The city name then has a letter: \u201eK\u00f8benhavn K\u201c, \u201eAarhus C\u201c or \u201eOdense S\u201c. The abbreviations stand for districts such as Centrum (C), Nord (N) or Syd (S).<\/p>\n

However, you do not necessarily need the letter for delivery. Each Danish zip code clearly belongs to exactly one postal district.<\/p>\n

Small side note<\/strong>The K in \u201eCopenhagen K\u201c is derived from \u201eKj\u00f8benhavn\u201c, the old spelling of the city's name.<\/p>\n

Zip codes in Denmark: Structure and logic<\/h2>\n

Danish zip codes consist of four digits. Around 1,200 of these are currently active.<\/p>\n

The first digit stands for the region. The numbers rise from Copenhagen in a northerly direction:<\/p>\n

1 = Copenhagen city center
2 = Greater Copenhagen area
5 = Funen
8 = Aarhus
9 = North Jutland<\/p>\n

The last two digits indicate the local district or delivery point.<\/p>\n

The logic behind this has historical roots. The numbering follows the former route of the mail trains that ran through the country from Copenhagen. The further away from the capital, the higher the number.<\/p>\n\n\n

When the zip code alone is not enough<\/h2>\n

Contrary to what is sometimes assumed, there are no addresses without street names in Denmark. In Sweden<\/a> this is quite common. The Danish Address Act (Adresseloven) stipulates this: Every address needs a street name, a house number and a zip code. Even in rural areas.<\/p>\n

What does exist, however, are so-called \u201esupplerende bynavne<\/strong>\u201c (additional place names). Around 30 % of all Danish addresses use them. They specify the location within a large zip code area. This can be the name of a village, a settlement or an island.<\/p>\n

\u201eDarup\u201c is the additional place name within the zip code area 4000.<\/p>\n

You will mainly find them where a zip code area covers a larger area. Or on small islands without their own zip code. They also provide the decisive clue in rural areas where the same street name occurs in several towns.<\/p>\n

The official Danish address register (DAR<\/a>) records all addresses in the country.<\/p>\n

How your parcel gets to Denmark<\/h2>\n

Most parcels in Denmark end up at a service point or parcel machine. Parcel machines in particular are growing strongly. Home delivery<\/a> remains popular, but Danes are increasingly opting for self-collection.<\/p>\n

Anyone shipping from Germany to Denmark uses their usual shipping service provider. Local delivery is then handled by a local partner:<\/p>\n

In Denmark, DHL cooperates with Bring or PostNord for the last mile.<\/p>\n

GLS operates its own network of around 1,650 parcel stores in the country.<\/p>\n

PostNord has the largest share, with around 1,300 parcel stores and around 3,300 Pakkebokse (parcel machines).<\/p>\n

Since January 2026 PostNorth<\/a> has discontinued letter delivery throughout Denmark. However, this has no impact on parcel delivery.<\/p>\n

Good to know: Many Danish customers expect to be able to select a pick-up point directly when ordering. Shipping platforms like Sendcloud<\/a> or Shipcloud<\/a> integrate directly into common store systems. Your customer selects their parcel store or vending machine in the checkout. The platform takes care of the rest.<\/p>\n

Greenland and the Faroe Islands: aren't they also part of Denmark?<\/h2>\n

Politically speaking, yes. However, neither territory belongs to the EU or the EU customs territory. You therefore treat shipments there as deliveries to a third country. This means that customs accompanying documents are mandatory.<\/p>\n

Greenland<\/strong> uses four-digit zip codes, just like Denmark. They always start with 39 (e.g. 3951 Qasigiannguit). However, the country code is GL<\/strong> instead of DK.<\/p>\n

The Faroe Islands<\/strong> use their own three-digit zip codes with the prefix FO<\/strong> (e.g. FO-100 T\u00f3rshavn). You can recognize them immediately by their format and prefix.<\/p>\n

When placing an order, make sure you know exactly where the delivery is actually going. Otherwise you will incur unnecessary costs.<\/p>\n

Are you planning to sell to Denmark or are you already doing so? Then go through these three points:<\/p>\n

Being able to read Danish addresses<\/strong>. If an order comes in with \u201eN\u00f8rregade 23, 3. tv.\u201c comes in, you should know what that means. Knowing the floor system and abbreviations will save you time in the event of queries, returns or address corrections.<\/p>\n

Check shipping service provider for Denmark coverage<\/strong>. Not every parcel service delivers equally well to Denmark. Check how your service provider handles the last mile and whether it uses the PostNord or GLS network.<\/p>\n

Recognize Greenland and the Faroe Islands<\/strong>. Both areas are not part of the EU. If an order comes in with the country code GL or FO, other rules apply. Customs accompanying documents are mandatory. If you overlook this, you will pay extra.<\/p>\n
