Addresses in Austria: An expedition through „Stiege, Top and Co.“

Austria Addresses Salzburg Post endereco address verification

Addresses in Austria follow their own rules - from the typical spelling to additional information such as „Stiege“ or „Top“ to rural peculiarities in the Alps. In this article, you will find out how Austrian postal addresses are correctly structured, what pitfalls there are and how you can reliably check even complex addresses with endereco.

How to navigate safely through Austria's address landscape and avoid returns.

If you think addresses are boring, you don't know Austria! There they are sometimes as winding as a ski slope map.
Fancy a little expedition through Austria's alpine world of addresses? Then lace up your hiking boots or put on your skis :-) and find out how to address your parcels to Austria correctly and how to avoid returns in your online store.

Typical structure of an address in Austria

Of course, the spelling of addresses also follows a clear pattern in the Alpine republic.
You can find the official specifications in the PDF „Correct addressing“ from the Austrian Post.

Example address and basic rules

  • Maximum 6 lines
  • Maximum 50 characters per line (because even Austrian Post is not infinitely patient)
  • Permitted special characters: period, comma, apostrophe, ampersand, slash, hyphen

Salutation, first and last name, title if applicable
Street name and house number
Zip code and city/town
Country

Mrs. Maria Mozart
Getreidegasse 9
5020 Salzburg
AUSTRIA

Tip: In Austria, the title is actually much more common than in Germany. If your customer has entered the title in the customer data, you should also use it.

Staircase, top, door: when parts of the address “45/2/3/8” sound like a mountaineering course

In cities such as Innsbruck, Vienna, Graz, Salzburg or Linz, the situation is more alpine: Austrian Post absolutely needs the additional information so that it can deliver to large residential units, some of which consist of several building complexes:

  • Staircase = House entrance or stairwell
  • Top = Floor or apartment unit
  • Door = concrete apartment

Example address long form
Mrs. Lisa Berg
Maria-Theresien-Straße 45/Staircase 2/Top 3/Door 8
6020 Innsbruck
AUSTRIA

Example address short form
Mrs. Lisa Berg
Maria-Theresien-Straße 45/2/3/8
6020 Innsbruck
AUSTRIA

Houses with two addresses: Yes, they do exist!

In the historic old towns, e.g. in Vienna or Graz, there are so-called Durchhäuser. This means that a building can have two official addresses, depending on which street you come from. This means that two addresses can be correct for delivery.

Rural and mountain addresses: the small hiking maps from Austrian Post.

Things get creative in the Alps. There are often no house numbers here, but rather field names such as „Am Bach“, „Hinterm Berg“ or „Auf der Sonnenalm“. And sometimes the house simply stands where it has been for 100 years.

Some municipalities have Districts or groups, that officially belong to the address. This often occurs in mountainous regions where villages are spread over several valleys.

Vienna - Addresses in XXL format

A particularly impressive example of the art of Austrian addressing can be found in Vienna!
Anton-Baumgartner-Strasse 44 (1230 Vienna) is home to Austria's largest residential complex - a real address miracle!

The building complex in Vienna-Liesing consists of 3 blocks, 24 stairs and comprises around 3,226 households and companies, including a shopping center, several medical practices and even schools. Around the following live and work here 6,024 people - a small town under a single street address, so to speak.

To ensure that no letter gets lost here, it is essential to provide details of the floor, top and door. Without them, Swiss Post simply does not know whether the parcel is to be delivered to the family on the 3rd floor or to the store in the shopping center on the first floor.

Fun Fact: Anton-Baumgartner-Strasse 44 is not only Vienna's largest residential complex - it has more inhabitants than many Austrian municipalities!

Packing stations and P.O. box addresses

Packing stations are vital in Austria - especially in remote valleys where the post comes by cable car.

Austria has over 3,000 Packstations, from cities to glacier regions.
The highest packing station in Europe is located in Ischgl at 1400 m above sea level. For all those who want to pick up their parcel between two descents :-) There is also a „drive-in packing station“ in Kitzbühel.

P.O. boxes are as popular in Austria as apple strudel. Addressing is simple and behaves in the same way as in Germany.

Example Packing station
Mr. Tom Online Shopper
Packstation 42
Packing station no. 1234567
5700 Zell am See
AUSTRIA

Example P.O. Box
Mrs. Anna Schreiber
P.O. Box 1234
1010 Vienna

From the Stiege to the Alm: why Austria's addresses are so charming

Whether it's in the city, where the staircase address delights the postmen, or in the mountains, where the letterbox hangs on even the smallest alpine hut. Austria's addresses are as diverse as its landscapes.

And the next time you write an address, remember:
In Vienna it's the top that counts, in Tyrol it's the mountain or the alpine pasture :-) and in South Tyrol it's bilingualism. But then we are already in Italy.
With this in mind: Servus, may your parcels always arrive quickly and safely and may there be no returns.
And if not - ask us!

PS Worth seeing: „That's where the action is“
The historic post offices in Vienna and Salzburg still have original letterboxes from the imperial and royal era.
In summer 2025, the Austrian Post under the motto „Ready for the Gallery“ letterboxes into canvases and nine artists, including the Viennese artist Martin Tardy, have transformed these everyday objects into real works of art.
