Shipping to the Netherlands: How to Address Your Packages Correctly

Iconic image of the Netherlands: a windmill by the canals, with a field of tulips in the foreground

Countless bicycles line the canals, while behind the dikes, the blades of a windmill turn. Just under 18 million people live in an area smaller than Bavaria. About 33 percent of the country lies below sea level, and around 20 percent of the population calls this home—protected by a complex system of dikes and pumping stations. Where space is scarce and water is ever-present, every meter of land is carefully planned. This shapes everyday life just as much as it does Dutch addresses.

A Dutch address is divided into four lines: the recipient’s name, the street name including the house number and any additional information, the ZIP code followed by the city name, and the destination country. Postal codes follow the 1234 AB format, meaning they consist of four digits and a space followed by two uppercase letters. The biggest challenge is often the addition to the house number. Abbreviations such as “hs,” numbers, or additions like “bis” precisely identify the correct residential unit in large apartment buildings. If the input system omits such additions or marks them as invalid, the shipment will go to the wrong recipient or may not arrive at all.

According to the latest Thuiswinkel Market Monitor According to the Thuiswinkel.org trade association, the Dutch e-commerce market is one of the most highly structured in Europe. In 2025, total consumer spending amounted to 35.7 billion euros, spread across a total of 347 million transactions. Of this total, approximately 13 percent consisted of cross-border purchases, corresponding to a volume of 4.5 billion euros from 45 million international orders.

Germany occupies a unique position in this regard, as no other country has experienced more rapid growth in cross-border transactions. According to Spotler Review In the final quarter of 2025, sales figures climbed by a remarkable 57 percent. This revenue growth was concentrated primarily in the Randstad metropolitan area surrounding Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague. This region accounts for an estimated 60 percent of all online retail transactions, according to analyses by Mordor Intelligence demonstrate.

Anyone who wants to attract these customers must rely on reliable package delivery. This requires accurate address data; however, in the Netherlands, the structure of addresses differs from that of German addresses.

How do you write an address correctly in the Netherlands?

At first glance, the address format looks normal. However, if you take a closer look, you'll notice some peculiarities that often cause problems for German online stores when it comes to displaying the address correctly.

Line 1: Recipient

As is customary in this country, the first and last names are listed together. If the address is for a company, the company name is listed first on a separate line.

Line 2: Street and house number

The street name and house number are written together, just as in Germany. Unlike in German, names such as street, laan, away or plein However, right in the name itself: Herengracht, Kalverstraat. In addition, a letter or an additional reference can optionally be added to the respective house number. Further details on this can be found later in the section titled “Address Specifications.”.

Line 3: Postal code and city

The ZIP code comes before the city name: 1012 AB Amsterdam. The first four characters represent a combination of the region and the town. These are followed by two uppercase letters that specify the exact street and the neighborhood. These two groups are separated by a single space.

Line 4: Country

For international packages, the destination country is always listed at the end, usually in English and in block letters, for example NETHERLANDS. However, if the shipment is domestic within the Netherlands, this last note does not apply at all.

The addition -3 identifies a specific residential unit in the building. According to the land registry, it consists of up to four characters and may include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers. In apartment buildings, it is required; otherwise, your package could easily end up with the wrong recipient.

How is the Dutch ZIP code structured?

According to Wikipedia The structure of the ZIP code is clearly organized:

  • The first two digits identify the respective area.
  • Items three and four define the municipality and the neighborhood, respectively.
  • The final pair of letters identifies the neighborhood or street block. For long street blocks, individual sections are each assigned their own designations.

House Number Suffix (huisnummertoevoeging)

Apartment numbers or letters that are added directly after the house number, such as 12A Kerkstraat, generally do not pose any difficulties. Such additions are considered an integral part of the house number and are fully compatible with all common online stores and database systems. More problematic, however, are additions that are separated by a hyphen. Such variations, including 12-1, 12-2 or 12-3, we encounter them in everyday life, particularly when it comes to the precise labeling of individual floors and separate apartments.

Amsterdam holds a special place in the Netherlands. In the past, the ground floor there was designated with the abbreviation hs (short for huis), while the floors above it are labeled with Roman numerals such as 12-I or 12-II received. Although the Amsterdam City Government In 1995, the official numbering system was completely converted to Arabic numerals, and according to the city administration, the old designations were even banned; however, in everyday life, both variants continue to coexist to this day.

Different cities handle this in different ways. For example, in Utrecht, the original apartment is designated with the suffix to is labeled, while the next one is labeled through A receives. An example address from there is therefore 42 Nieuwegracht until or. Nieuwegracht 42 bis A.

In Haarlem, abbreviations such as ZW (Zwart) for the ground floor and RD (Rood) for the upper floors, where an address is located, such as Kruisstraat 15 ZW. Maastricht uses its own unique classification system with labels such as Grote Gracht 146A02, which is broken down by house number, floor, and room. In senior living facilities and student dormitories, one also regularly encounters patterns such as 145-309 Rotterdamseweg, where the last two digits indicate the floor and the room.

Parcel delivery services in the Netherlands

If you’re shipping from Germany, the Dutch delivery service usually depends directly on your German logistics partner. If the shipment is handled by DHL, DHL eCommerce NL typically takes care of delivery to the address in the Netherlands. Companies such as GLS, DPD, and UPS, on the other hand, have their own networks in the neighboring country or work with regional partners.

Originally established as a state-owned postal service, it remains PostNL Mordor Intelligence According to reports, it is the market leader today with a share of around 60 percent. For German online retailers, the company’s direct shipping operations may seem somewhat confusing, but its name appears regularly in tracking overviews. After all, PostNL is often responsible for the final leg of cross-border package deliveries in this country.

In the Netherlands, DHL It holds a market share of about 35 percent and is considered the preferred logistics partner by numerous German online retailers. For local operations, the company has its own logistics network, which operates under the names DHL Parcel and DHL eCommerce.

DPD, GLS and UPS They divide the remaining market among themselves, with no single provider significantly exceeding the 5 percent mark. For those who do not handle their packages through DHL, these companies serve as reliable partners for accessing the Dutch logistics network.

Payment Methods for the Netherlands Checkout

In the Netherlands, iDEAL dominates the e-commerce market by a wide margin. According to the Mollie E-Commerce Report 2025 Sixty-six percent of consumers in the country prefer this method. PayPal follows with 47 percent, while credit and debit cards together account for 39 percent.

If iDEAL isn't available at checkout, you risk losing customers from the Netherlands to your competitors. Integrating this payment method into your online store is easy through established payment service providers such as Mollie, Stripe, Adyen, or PayPal Checkout.

Your next step

Be sure to thoroughly test your online store before you ship your first package to the Netherlands. Does your house number field also accept additions such as 29-3, 12 hours or 12A? Does your system recognize Dutch ZIP codes in the format 1234 AB, including spaces? And is iDEAL available as a payment option?

Although the Netherlands is considered the least complicated EU foreign market for German online retailers, those unfamiliar with local conventions regarding address formatting will only realize this when processing returns.
